Windows 10 Update
2020-01-19: Critical Microsoft Windows 10 Update Must Be Installed
On Tuesday Jan. 14, 2020 (patch Tuesday) Microsoft released a critical patch for all currently supported versions of Windows 10, and versions 1903 & 1909 in particular. This patch fixes an extremely serious Windows security defect in the operating system that was discovered by the NSA (National Security Administration) and communicated to Microsoft by the NSA. This defect could allow an attacker to use this weakness to impersonate everything from trusted Web sites to the source of software updates for Windows and other programs, and thus makes it extremely dangerous. Initial indications are that certain bad actors are diligently working to exploit this flaw on any PC that has not installed the required update. Please note that their attempts to exploit the flaw will succeed, when they attack a PC that has not installed the update from Microsoft.
Here is what you must do:
- Launch PC Settings, aka Windows Settings, select and click on “Update & Security” ***
- The Windows Update screen will appear and if it indicates that No Updates are Available, you should make certain of that by clicking the box labeled “Check for Updates”.
- If the 1/14 Patch has already been installed you will again be informed that,” No Updates are Available”. Otherwise, this patch and other updates will be downloaded onto your PC and the installation will be completed only after you are instructed to restart your PC, the restart is successful.
It is imperative that this patch be installed ASAP. Therefore, please do not assume that or wait for Microsoft, has done it or will do so shortly. You must take control in order to defend yourself.
You can check “Update History” from the “Windows Update” screen to make certain that the patch labeled KB4528760 has been installed.
*** If you don’t know how to get to “Update & Security” in PC Settings please use the Google search engine to find out.
